We now have three designs for paper folders inspired by traditional folders that we obtained from retired bookbinders. These are hand made from a range of timber species, particularly hardwoods such as eucalypt, manuka, rata, or beech, all of which work very well. We have also used perspex for some folders as it tends to wear very well.
All wooden folders are finished with a wax treatment to enhance the grain and protect the material.
The Rounded Folder is shaped to a natural curve with a long straight edge. The folder is about 100mm long and up to 60mm wide, with a beveled straight edge for the hard work of creasing. We've tested these out while folding light card and they work beautifully. The curved shape fits comfortably and allows you to apply plenty of pressure with your thumb when making the crease without cramping your hand.
The Straight Folder is about 150mm long and 40mm wide with straight sides and ends. Corners are slightly rounded to avoid damaging the paper. The bottom side of this folder is flat, with the top surface curved to create narrow edges.
The Torpedo Folder is about 120mm long and 40mm wide with straight sides and pointed ends. Both faces are curved to create a versatile tool perfect for shaping corners in origami and papercraft projects.
