Castle Hill Station is one of the most iconic landmarks in the journey over the Southern Alps. This reprint of a family’s memoir brings together excerpts from the diary of Castle Hill’s original settler, his brother's prolific collection of watercolour paintings of the district, biographies of pioneering scientists, and a look at the alpine plants that make this region a unique locality.

From the diary of John Enys: “We were off again and by 9 o’clock had the sheep at a river we wanted to cross, the yards being on the other side. We were two hours crossing. The sheep would not go in. We took them up and hurled them in, but no, back they came again and, breaking into small mobs, rushed past men and over dogs in a most determined way, but they gave in after a two hours fight and crossed. The sheep were fairly beaten and so were we for as soon as I had a bath and a good dinner, I slept for three hours.”

132 pages, A5 format, Profusely illustrated with colour paintings by Charles Enys and the book's original black and white photographs.
