This nifty cradle is designed to hold the signature for your book while you make holes for stitching. The jig has holes about 15mm apart (for the large cradles) or 10mm (for the small cradles) so you can make your own spacing to suit the job. We have kept the holes as small as possible so that you make a small hole in the signature. Large holes tend to create a sloppy binding when the pagesets are bound.
A large cradle can accommodate a book pageset 300mm long, while the small cradle is perfect for A5 books.
As shown in the photos, simply fold the book signature or page set, butt it up against the fence, place the jig in position and make the holes you need for stitching. The 3mm wide gap at the base of the cradle will allow the awl to go right through the page set.
Cradles are made from New Zealand Oregon, rimu or spruce, depending on availability of timber. Each is finished with wax or oil to enhance the grain.
Approximate dimensions for large cradles: 330 x 65 x 82mm.
Approximate dimensions for small cradles: 245 x 60 x 70mm.
This tool is the perfect choice to use with our range of lined and blank journal pages.
Each cradle is supplied with an awl.
