This classy book vice is an essential piece of gear for repairing old books or converting paperbacks to hard covers. The vice is a standard piece of equipment in all binderies, and this model is designed to be portable for use anywhere in the bindery, workshop or household. It's used for attaching mull to the spine of the book or for any light work on the spine. (These models are not suitable for rounding the spine, which normally involves work with a hammer and a more rigid vice.)
The standard sized vice can hold a book up to 70mm thick and up to 320mm long. Made of New Zealand Oregon, tightened with plum nuts.
The small vice is designed for A5 books, available in either New Zealand Oregon or European Spruce. Plum nuts are supplied for tightening.
Each vice is hand-made and finished with a coat of beeswax and oil to enhance the timber. Your model may have a different finish from the one in these photographs. The vice is sold fully assembled and ready to use.
The vice is supplied with two wooden blocks to elevate it in case you are binding wide books.
