Last of the Whalers, Charlie Heberley's Story, by Heather Heberley
This is a biographical chronicle that details the life of her father-in-law, Charlie Heberley, and the vanishing shore-based whaling industry in New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds.
Overview and Themes
Charlie Heberley was an acknowledged leader, master gunner, and veteran of the Perano whaling enterprise in Tory Channel and Great Barrier Island, working in the industry until it closed down in 1964. He belonged to a prominent local maritime family; his great-grandfather was the famous "Worser" Heberley, and Charlie married Ruby Guard, a descendant of John Guard (the first white child born in the South Island).
While Charlie spent his life in a rough, dangerous, and bloody trade, he later grew to oppose unbridled exploitation, supporting the whaling moratorium and speaking out against commercial depletion.
The book blends gritty historical accounts of whale pursuits with family humor, resilience, and local color.
