Children of the Dawn: Stories of Asian Peasant Children is a 1957 book by New Zealand author, educator, and political activist Rewi Alley. Published in Beijing, the collection features stories and vignettes highlighting the lives, struggles, and resilience of impoverished rural children in Asia during a period of immense social and political change.
The book reflects Alley's deep empathy for the Chinese peasantry and his firsthand observations of the hardships faced by the working class. Having spent decades in China as a relief worker, factory inspector, and founder of the Bailie technical schools, Alley utilized his writing to advocate for international peace and bring global attention to rural development.
