Adventures of a Surveyor in New Zealand and Australia by John Rochefort.
Written when the author was barely into his twenties, the book is famous for its high-spirited, candid, and often mischievous tone. Rochfort arrived in New Zealand in 1852 at the age of 19 alongside his brother James.
He worked initially for the government surveying in Wellington and surveyed native reserves in Rangitikei alongside Robert Park and Douglas McLean. Dissatisfied with government pay, he left for the Victorian goldfields in Australia before returning to London to publish his candid, fast-paced account.
He returned to New Zealand a few years later, working extensively for the Nelson and Canterbury provincial councils. His major explorations included mapping the Buller and Taramakau rivers, discovering gold and coal (leading to the naming of Mt Rochfort), and laying out the town of Greymouth.
