This restored vintage book press is commonly called a lying press or laying press. Like our other models, the press is used to firmly hold a book's spine or text block flat for tasks like gluing, trimming with a plough. back or spine decoration.  The press creates immense, even pressure with wooden screws. A lying press is often part of a larger setup with a plough and stand.

This press will need to be supported on blocks to allow the pages to hang down.

Made of rimu blocks with 1 1/4 inch diameter wooden screws. The screws tighten into aluminium nuts set into the other block. This is a robust and classical piece of gear. The long screws allow for packing in several page sets for perfect binding.

Blocks are 633mmlong, 100mm high and 556mm wide. The screw thread is 310mm long, and the gap between the threads is 465mm.
