This beautiful restored vintage book press is commonly called a lying press or laying press. Like our other models, the press is used to firmly hold a book's spine or text block flat for tasks like gluing, trimming with a plough. back or spine decoration.  The press creates immense, even pressure with wooden screws. A lying press is often part of a larger setup with a plough and stand.

This press will need to be supported on blocks or legs to allow the pages to hang down.

Made of Silky Oak blocks with 2 inch diameter wooden screws. This is a robust and classical piece of gear. The long screws allow for packing in several page sets for perfect binding.

Blocks are 670mm long, 96mm high and 67mm wide. The screw thread is 405mm long, and the gap between the threads is 440mm. Short pieces of Manuka dowel are provided for turning the handles.
